Ellis premiere debut single, “The Drain” with Stereogum

Ellis is the musical project of Linnea Siggelkow. Begun in her Hamilton bedroom, before expanding into a full time band earlier this year, Ellis has established a reputation as one of the more promising new artists in Canada, despite having never released a note of recorded music, on the back of opening stints with the likes of Soccer MommyÓ (FKA Eskimeaux), ChastityPalehound, and Free Cake For Every Creature.

Today, Ellis is premiering their first single, “The Drain,” on Stereogum. Described by Stereogum as “a swooning, hazy piece of music, capturing the lure of those early relationship stages,” the track matches a lilting melody with a remarkably fully-realized aesthetic. A sparse arrangement, and Siggelkow's understated vocal build towards a soaring chorus, abetted by a Factory Records-esque string synth and layered backing vocals, that marry a downbeat, shoegaze grandeur to Ellis’ adeptly constructed, nostalgic indie pop.

Sigglekow expands on the song's background to Stereogum:

“‘The Drain’ is one of the first songs I wrote for this project. It’s probably also the most hopeful. It’s about self-sabotaging a relationship because you’re afraid of how deep it’s getting, but then saying ‘fuck it’ and diving in anyway.”

“The Drain” is online now and will be available via streaming services on Friday, July 27th. It will appear on Ellis’ debut EP which is expected in the fall. The band have upcoming live appearances with Free Cake For Every CreatureVallens and T Rextasy, full details of which can be found below.
